StoryChapter I: Mafiaparadise story
Almost 80 chilly winters have passed since the dry law ended, and we are still here with our illegal secrets. Still breathing until some unhappy competitor ends our miserable lives, or some cop busts our business – it’s a sad yet proper exit for people like us.
This is not a life! It’s absolutely incomparable to what we had – wealth and power are what we’re used to. It’s another sad truth that those good times are long gone and few of us can even remember them.
I am among those who can. The "Capone times" as they are referred to, were our era of leadership, power and wealth.
But Capone is long gone and the rest of us must lurk in the shadows of the ordinary people to cloak ourselves from the government and its dirty hand − the police. Oh yes, the police − the blood thirsty mosquitoes are everywhere, listening to our calls, digging in our mailbox, even checking our garbage and electricity bills, to see if we aren’t growing any pot in our back yard, damn them. Our kind, the Mafia kind, is fading out and it’s only up to us to bring back the old days of glory. All the wealth and well-being, respect and subjection, money and gold − the damn government is taking our last breadcrumbs right out of our hands.
Our best hope is to survive in the last city, where the government has yet to spread its roots − we call it our last hope, the MafiaParadise. It’s a city full of residents, casinos and other buildings that are so vital to Mafia that make it a perfect place for a clean start. All the families and organizations are now moving to this haven to do business, gather strength and move on − the future is in our hands, and this time, the control will be where it’s meant to be, in the hands of the strongest families.
Chapter II: The Invitation
It is Monday, an hour before the lunch break and you are sitting in your chair, doing your everyday work behind your dusty laptop computer. It feels a bit strange today, the whole morning has left you a feeling of nervous dread like something is in the air which irritates and sharpens your senses.
Maybe it’s because of the rain outside, or an argument with the chief. Or, it’s just hunger since it’s almost lunch and you haven’t eaten at all since eight o’clock.
Suddenly the phone rings.
It’s the same strange number that you missed a call from a week ago. You let it ring a few times, just to get a moment with yourself to speculate about its probable purpose and, after that, you answer.
"Hello", says a weirdly familiar throaty voice, "Are you well, my dear nephew?"
Ah, it’s my uncle Sam from Chicago − you recognize. "Hi Sam, I’m okay."
"You probably haven’t a clue why I’m calling you. But it’s quite an urgent matter and I needed to talk to you. Don’t worry, it won’t take long."
"I’m listening, Sam", you respond quickly due to the urgent tone you hear in his voice.
"The government is on my tail, so I must be brief. I have opened a small business in the Paradise city, not fully legal but pays well. I’m asking if you could run the business for some months until I get the police off my back."
"Well… Sam, I don’t really know if I could manage this kind of work. I have my apartment and work here too."
"Don’t be foolish, nephew. You will have your own headquarters to run the business and enough money to buy up the present company you’re working for – a chance like that comes up only once in a lifetime. DAMN, they’re coming. I must finish. Be well, don’t forget to send me your details so I can get in touch – you have my last address… Arghh!… shhhh…".
The phone goes dead.
"Oh". You take a long breath. "Okay". You think about it for a moment, then you take out a pen and a piece of paper…
